How do we determine if the bank we are roll searching at is a dump bank. One bank I go to has 800 dollars worth of halves. Is this some ones rejects or is it buried treasure in that vault. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone else have dump banks near there town meaning there is another serious roll hunter working the banks?

I read here on another thread a guy said he would buy a few rolls go outside and check them and if he found anything good would go in any buy the rest. Hope this helps.

Of course his method is not foolproof. There is every possibility that it is both a dump bank and has treasure buried in there. More then 1 person might cash in halves.

My theory is if a bank has any halves, buy them all. Never ever leave any. When they ask you how many do you want, say you want them all. Of course you will have to carry around lots of bills on you to pay for this, but if you leave any there, someone else will get them before you. If its a dump, you will learn pretty quickly but dump banks have silver in them sometimes. Find yourself a bank that has a free coin machine and cycle them through there in $3-400 dumps. That way you are cleaning out dump banks to free up any that grandma brings in that she has been holding for 50 years. Make friends with tellers and ask them if you can leave your number so they can call you if any halves come in. Never mention you are looking for sivler, just that you collect coins or assemble books and need a large volume of coins to keep your hobby up. Trust me, this will pay off somewhere down the road.

So I don't get back my already searched rolls, I re-roll them to dump, I mark the rolls with a small NG.
Now, if we all did that it might save us some time by not searching rolls that have already be searched and marked.

Frankly .... I don't worry about it.

IMHO ...... the vast majority of coins being cycled through banks today is due mostly to regular folks exchanging their coins for bills .... and the volume of collector 'dumps' is a small percentage of the total amount.

I have some data to support this ..... my 'dump' bank continues to deliver circulated nickels at the same find rates as my other purchase banks ...... sooooo ... my 'dumps' are washed out in the overall volume of everyday folks turning in their coins.

That's my view .... others may choose to differ.

AGCoinhunter has got the right idea. Buy them all, dont leave any to chance. After a while you can get a pretty good sense of what might be searched and what might not be. But play it safe and take them all! Also mentioned was becoming friendly with tellers. This goes a long way if you are polite with them. I haven't been so bold as to leave a number behind yet but am thinking about it with all my local banks.

I agree with AG Coinhunter. Buy them all, and dig through them. You never know what you will find. If you get skunked, so what, we all have been skunked on boxes at least once before. In my opinion, you will most likely find something worthy of your time.
Plus, if you take the halves, you will be doing the head teller a big favor. Most likely, they will be willing to save any other halves that come in just for you, which will eventually yield silver.
