While many of the early colonies produced copper coins to supply the needs of commerce, these early American coins are heavily copied and counterfeited.
The first thing to do to authenticate your example is to look at the edge of the coin. Most copies are cast, leaving a raised line along the edge of the coin.
If your coin passes the cast test, look for photos and descriptions of known pieces. Weighing and measuring the coin will help to determine authenticity.
