Why are these sample slabs called "Old Rattlers"? And do you believe they are a MS64 grade?

When PSGS was co-founded by Daid Hall and John Dannreuther in 1985. PCGS made a number of MS-64 sample coin slabs ( somewhat similar to the present design but smaller). The coins all had serial # 1234567 and I have rarly seen one graded over a MS 64.

I presume they where samples "as they say" given to coin dealers to promote the PCGS TPG (third party grading). Housed in tamper resistant plastic holder with a certification of the year, mint mark and grade. They are nicknamed Old Rattler.

They are not tightly held, as the new slabs, the coins will rattle in the case.

Rattlers where another name of barkers, ones who promote shows at carnivals. Thus a sample to promote PCGS

I would enclose a photo of one if I could, maybe some one more graphic savoy then me can do it.

all first generation slabs are rattlers, they were called that because the coin inside rattled around in the slab and would also spin. I used to have a few of these old slabs and even cracked one open to put the coin in my 7070 album. I don't really like the rattler holders and never kept them very long when I acquired one. I have also seen quite a few with grades over 64

As Bryan said all first generation PCGS slabs are "rattlers", and the very first sample slab rattlers had 0000.00/000000 for the serial number. These all zero sample slabs are much scarcer than the later ones with the 123456 serial number.
