Thought some would find this very good reading, there is still a fight in some......

A Michigan congressman is trying to persuade the U.S. Mint to strike proof examples of gold and silver American Eagles in 2009.

Taking up the cause of collectors disappointed by not being able to acquire the proofs is U.S. Rep. Gary C. Peters, D-Mich., who wrote a letter to Mint Director Edmund C. Moy Nov. 12. He also wrote what is called a "Dear Colleague" letter to the other 434 members of the U.S. House of Representatives asking them to co-sign his letter to Moy.

"We understand that there has been extraordinary demand for the business-strike bullion versions and that the Mint is required to produce the bullion versions 'in quantities sufficient to meet public demand,'" Peters wrote. "While we appreciate your efforts to comply with the aforementioned laws, we do not believe that this must preclude coining proof silver and gold American Eagles this year."

Peters cited collector disappointment at the interruption of an annual series that has been unbroken since 1986.

He asked Moy to reconsider his decision even if it means fewer proofs this year as compared to 2007 or 2008. He also asked Moy not to destroy already prepared dies until after Jan. 1, 2010.

"The U.S. Mint could take orders for 2009 proof versions of silver and gold American Eagles, coin as many as possible before the end of the year, and devise a fair way to apportion the coins that were minted," Peters wrote. "A lottery system limiting coins to one per individual would be equitable and ensure that as many collectors as possible could participate."

Peters titled his letter to his House colleagues as "Help collectors and raise revenue."

"This program also makes money for the Treasury; revenue raised from the American Eagle products was $166 million in FY08 and $220.1 million in FY07," he wrote.

Time is of the essence. Even if the Mint reverses itself, it might simply trade the problem of collectors being upset at the gap in the American Eagle series with a bigger one of collectors angry at not being able to successfully buy one of the resulting strikes that even Peters recognizes would be in short supply.

PS, Did anyone else write a letter to the Numismatic News Editor, Mr David Harper, about your opinions "in writing" on this subject, he, in one of the lastest editions was seeking anyone's opinions, please write to:david.harper@fwmedia.com, if you are like myself and many others and would like a chance to voice your opinion on this 2009 Proof Silver/Gold Eagles being produced.

I'm really glad that a congressman in a state that arguably is the most troubled in the union has the time to request proof coins be struck so that he can no doubt buy some and add them to his collection. Doesn't he have anything better to do like solving Michigan's 15% unemployment or trying to work with the auto industry to retain jobs and improve efficiencies? This is exactly why I hate politicians.

"We're really glad you are working real hard to follow the law, but could you please just reconsider and violate it a little bit to increase revenue to the Treasury and maybe make a few collectors happy and get them off my back."

Honestly, I don't have a problem with this. I'm sure there are a lot more useless ways he could have spent the time it took to draft and send this letter.

The only problem I have, is it took too much time for someone to speak up for collectors. I seriously doubt that 2009 dated American Eagle coins will actually get minted. This is just a little too late.

Also agreed. This is just a bone thrown to everyone who has written him screaming about it. Since he actually "said something" now he can say he did - but he waits until this late to do so, when the Mint can then take another 2-3-4 weeks to respond.. "gee, if you'd voiced your opinions earlier..." Give me a break, it's all politics, and that man is trying to blow major smoke somewhere.

Next up: "Hey, I went to bat for you!" ... grrrr!

I wrote the US mint who forwarded my letter the the treasury department and I final got back a standard letter from them about the silver eagle proofs which was basically the same thing the mint stated on their website.

I wonder if they would take more notice if I produced a video about it and how the US mint is not meeting the needs of collectors?

Anyway that was an interesting read and I hope the congressman has more push because I would really like to have a 2009 proof rather than this 4 oz private minted giant coin I bought for my 2009 silver proof..lol

Sadly though, it probably isn't gonna happen Mike. An "upstart" Congressman voicing his opinion on behalf of constituents and friends will not likely change this for this year.....

(but I "do" have my 2009 ASE !.....and it's slabbed MS69 too.......uncirculated dealer bullion is the only way for this year !)

Eaglefoot, Thanks for your input and others also, I do not believe it is to late to have some sort of resolution in this matter, I know a few years coins and bullion were produced and sold into the following years, just hope by trying, something positive may evolve......PS: Did you ( Eaglefoot ) see the ad for the bullion 2009 silver Eagle on the back of the December 1st's issue of Numismatic News, $21.00 shipping and handling included......

I was apparently in cynical mode last night and was overly harsh in my reply.. sorry about that. Nothing puts me in a snit quicker than the useless blatherings of politicians.. however, at least this time, this one blathered about coins

Still think it's too little, too late.. but he at least brought it up. Maybe it will help sway future decisions by the Mint in a more collector-friendly direction.

I didn't Mike. But mine was a graded/slabbed MS69 ASE for $23.00 (shipping/handling included) with a nice Bausch & Lomb loupe as a free gift to boot ! ..... I only need one really....and "so far" it's been a good deal.
