Yes 1958 often have "Black Beauties". They are much less often seen but they can be found on 1956 and 57 coins. Surprisingly I can't recall ever seeing any 1960 coins.
These days the black color in these "black beauty" nickels is attributed to improper annealing. Exposure to intense or prolonged heat (it's not clear which) in the annealing oven can turn a planchet black. That's certainly the case with more recent examples of improper annealing. Alan Herbert once floated the idea that the black color was due to silicon in the alloy, but I had a black beauty tested with SEM/X-ray analysis and no silicon was found.
