I have a 1821 but Half in my type set. It is problem free in VF condition. Local coin shop just got in a 1834 in XF really nice looking coin. I think the 1821 is a little better date. What would you all do upgrade or not. I think it would be a close to even trade, as far as the money part.

Would like to see a picture of the 1821. There are only 7 varieties to the 1821 with Overton # O.107 being the only rare variety. The 1834 has 21 different varieties with several rare one. The 1821 is listed at $130 in VF condition, and the 1834 is listed at $180 in EF condition. If I had to choose I would go for the 1834.

I hope these pics turn out clear. First time I use the sun light coming in the window on white paper. Then cropped pic with Picasa3 and used auto contrast. Used the export pic to a picasa folder to shrink file size.

Your 1821 is a sweet looking bust half. I can't wait to what the 1834 looks like if you are trading up for condition. Echizento points out that there are 21 Overton varieties for the 1834, there are also 12 known contemporary counterfeit varieties for that date as well. 1834 can be an entire collection with just one date with 33 different.

I have had this one for I know over 20 years. I never looked into Overton varieties. I remember buying this 1821 off a bid board auction for somewhere around $30. The 1834 really caught my eye, maybe it was just that first look but has a really nice bold detail. Maybe I should just buy it and keep both.. not sure .. looking at a 1917 SL quarter in VF or a 1908 S Indian head. I told the dealer would let him know Monday.

Very nice coin, this looks like O.102 which is rated as R2. I would grade it as VF-35. I'd say buy the 1834 and keep the 1821.

Keep them both if you can, you cannot have too many nice original early US type coins.
