I have a question for you guys, because something happened to me today at the PO that bugged me a bit.
Do any of you miss a lot of coins and get a slip to go pick them up? When you do, do you usually have to wait in line? I've gone there to pick up quite a lot of packages, and pretty much every time, they always just let me go to the front and get the thing in a few seconds since they're back there anyway. I'm sure I've seen many other people do it too. I wouldn't say I'm really an impatient person, but I was under the impression that I could just go up there and get my package and leave since that is what always has happened. I mean, if I actually have to mail something, I always wait etc.
Anyhow, today, I went to the front to get my package, and they tell me I have to wait in line, and it takes about 30 minutes. All because the employee couldn't just grab the thing when they were back there in a matter of 5 seconds or whatever, so that made me pretty mad. I mean, I guess it was because it was real busy since I have never had this happen before, but I was pretty T-d off to be told "don't cut the line" in front of everyone after I was always allowed to just go get it. Consistency is the operative word here.
Our PO is really garbage though; I've had problems with them with regards to mailing coins abroad and stuff, so I usually just go to another one when I want to mail anything serious since the employees other one a little further away doesn't ask tons of questions. So I'm sure this thread has been made before, but feel free to share some of your bad PO experiences, because I am interested now.... Edited by coinguybrian 12/05/2009 8:16 pm

Wow, most of the Post Offices around me have a separate window for packages and held mail pickup, you do not have to wait in the normal service lines.

Yeah, at the end some guy called us up for that, but that was a long time after I got in line.

We always have to wait in line, and if someone feels like it they ask if anyone is there to just pick up a package. That only happens about 1/10 of the time, though. Our little local post office is a nightmare.

It's never bothered me to wait in line, so I just do. No big deal, just part of living in civilized society.

It doesn't make sense to me when it's just a 10 second thing, but I'll do it....it's just so random the way they do things sometimes...

You mean there are post Offices have more than one person working the counter? I'm used to small town Post Offices (the kind that close for an hour and a half for lunch)

Our PO usually has 2 people working the counter, and often a person from the back will come up to the front and ask if anyone has only a package to pick up.

Maybe they asked you to wait in line this time because of the busy holiday mailing season.

My PO has a single line for ALL services (not counting those APC kiosks). So if you tried to go to the front of the line you would most likely get beat down by an angry MOB

by me the local post office has at times several people working there. NO not at the counter but you can see all kinds of people in the back. Sometimes they walk by the front counter going from one door to another but never help at the counter. A line around this time of year gets to about 10 to 20 people and still only one at the counter. HHHMMMM. Wonder what goes on back there. As to lost in the mail coins. Sort of a black hole in that place somewhere. It has happened to many people I know but so far not to me. Might be due to never ordering anything via mail.

If I am receiving a coin in the mail, it is because I thought it was nice enough to wait for . . .

The other day I stopped off at the PO to buy two stamps. I even paid in exact change. Should I have been able to push to the front of the line? As a retail pharmacist I used to work out in front of the customers all day. Inevitably there were customers who thought they knew how to do my job better than me. Their comments never benefitted anyone and often caused frustration for the staff. For your sake, please don't be that person.

My Post Office opens at 7:00 a.m. and NO ONE goes there then. Since I'm up getting the kids to the bus anyway at that time, I slip away to the P.O. and get my coins early.
Works great!
