While coming out of a store today there was a bell ringer set up with her donation kettle. I reached into my pocket to give her my change and I had this thought. " Wait... I have not yet checked these coins for copper cents, State Quarters, or for any dates that I may need." I instead pulled out my wallet and gave her a paper dollar bill. Then my second thought was, maybe I should volunteer next year so I could search the coins that people donate.

Police are looking for the former Salvation Army worker who set up his own "kettle" on Sunday at a local Walgreens in Topeka. Seems that he'd been fired a few days previous for showing up late and then claiming that his kettle was full and for people just to put their money in his hat on top of the kettle. In other words ... I don't think that many volunteers are going to have a chance to finger Salvation Army change. Oh, and on top of that someone has been dropping four-leaf clovers in the kettles and suggesting that the local Salvation Army auction them on ebay. Does Whitman make a four-leaf-clover folder now? lol

I think just about every year someone puts gold coins in the kettle, haven't heard of it happening this year yet maybe its because of the recession or something but I know for the last few years every year there has been a 20.00 gold coin in the kettle from someone

I never drop money in the pot, instead I give to the food bank of a local outreach they supply homeless shelters and other efforts in my local area.
this time of year I also have another venture that I do that will net me a years worth of coins to search.

I threw a few Buffalo nickel culls in my local kettle. This guy is there every year, I know he's legit ;-)

CNN had a story today about someone putting a platinum and diamond ring in the pot, which is pretty much on par with a gold coin.
