Well I am new to colecting paper currency. My father just recently gave me a currency book full of all kinds of various notes. I was told this was for Christmas this year and he wanted to pass it down. I have taken some pictures of some of the notes and I have several already in a photobucket but I turn to these boards(which I am new to) to ask for some advice could you tell me if I have some rarities or if everything is pretty common place.

Any help would be appreciated and I will leave the link to my photobucket if care to look at some of the others.

This is a 1914 $5 large note burke/glass sig. but the lable on the left says only 12 notes known and I am trying to figure out what makes it rare or if it even is.

I would really recommend purchasing a book or two in order to learn more about what you have. My first recommendation would be Paper Money of the United States by the Friedbergs. There are a lot of other good books out there too depending upon what you have and what you're interested in. Another good overview would be the recently released Whitman Encyclopedia of U.S. Paper Money by Q. David Bowers. A fabulous free tool (you just have to go through a very quick registration process) is the Heritage Auction website- https://www.HA.com/Currency. The site contains an auction archives section with prices, descriptions and fantastic images for several hundred thousand notes. You could also join SPMC- the Society of Paper Money Collectors. Their monthly publication, Paper Money, is great.

Yeah Johnboy, I will answer your question as you asked it (un-sugar coated). No, you have no 'real rarities' here.

The 1862 $5 note is scarce and in nice condition.

The 1896 $1 is common and rather worn in comparison, but is a popular design.

The sticker on that 1914 $5 Burke/Glass is erroneous; this is a common note.

The real treasure here is that beautiful 1869 $2 rainbow; it is scarce, it seems to be in excellent condition, and it is highly sought after.
