I opened a 1955-S Lincolin penny roll marked " U.S. National Bank - Portland" - "Hanley Coinrap Co, S.F.

Inside I found ( 7 ) seven pennies with the same identical mark ( glob of extra metal )on the left wheat-ear. I've given it a temporary nickname "The Cocoon", until I learn more.

Being from an original bank roll you can figure they are pretty darn nice looking...... MS63 and up surely. [:p]

Does anyone think I should have these graded?

I'll post some photos for everyone ........

That would have been caused by a nifty little chip or gouge in the die. Die chips dont really have much of a premium (unless it is a Wisconsin quarter LOL) other than being a curiosity but those are some nice red Lincolns.

Hi 3rd-branch

Biokemist is correct, about this being a die chip,, there must have been thousands put into circulation, In my last batch of circulated wheaties that I went through, I pulled several of the same die chip out,,

of course yours is BU red and thats really cool !!! I would love to have an example like that !!

So early retirement isn't in these coins huh?

It's fun opening these rolls. [:p] My original plan was to put it up for "collecting" purposes, but then I thought ..... why should the grandkids get the fun of opening these babies

It's like Christmas time

Thanks for the responses .... Uh Metalman ... was that a hint?

Hi 3rd-branch

No not a hint, just a thought what it would be like to have already found circulated examples and then open a BU bank roll to find UNC's.

I will see if I can find those coins, I just recently bagged and tagged a bunch of stuff that I have taken out, and deposited them in another container and then deposited that in the safe.

I will try and post pics of the circulated ones I found,, If I remember right, I think I found at least two that showed a slight progression to this chip. it will be interesting to see which you have found ,early or later .

Metalman ......
I didn't mention it earlier, but I did find two others that the "Cocoon" is much smaller, and in the same spot. Just a size variance.

I kind of thought that it may have been the start of the die going bad. Just wasn't certain.
I'll get some photos on here for you to see the differences.

Hi 3rd-branch

I have not found the 55-S coins yet, but I did find the 52-P, 53-P-55-P 56-P and the 57-P and D with wheat ear die chips .

Im still looking as I get time for the 55-S coins ,I know I have them in these bags some place.
