Bought this off ebay a little bit ago, what would you grade it? It is a bit flashier than the pictures IMO.

I'm not very good at grading gold. but from the pics, I would say MS-63

I'm guessing AU58. It's a nice looking coin that might go MS but the coronet tip and hair seem to have a touch of wear.

Looks like plenty of mint luster..a spot or two and rim ticks prevent this from GEM MS-63 ($500 range)

I graded it MS-63. I agree that the photos make it look AU, though. For some reason, gold is tough to photograph and thus the pictures really didn't come out showing the true 'brilliance' it has.
I bought this hoping to slab it as a really high grade, but upon getting it it became apparent that a few stray hairlines and rim scuffs would keep it from something like 64 or better. It's better than some 63's I have seen though in my opinion, so I am going to stick it in my type set for awhile. I paid $450.

Looks MS to me, with abundant luster and no large hits. The copper spot at the date will limit the grade and it looks like there is some kind of shallow dent right above Liberty's head (possibly a planchet defect?). Hairlines and/or other cleaning signs don't show in the images. Overall, seems solid for MS-63, and a very pretty coin!

Nice shadow! I say solid 63 with a decent shot at 64. I don't think it looks AU at all, and would be surprised if it didn't grade MS. The only thing slightly distracting is the spot by the "1" of the date...but very nice overall! Great type example!

I just thought it looked AU because of the 'darkness' in the fields apparent in the photographs (to me anyway) that often comes with AU coins. No dent above the head, I think that's also the picture. i'll be posting more gold coins as I buy them, mostly going for $1 and $2.5, others too expensive now. Don't know enough about counterfeits too, maybe I should learn....

copper spots did not change the gold coin grade, at least for MS67 and less.

The problem with gold is there are a large amount of transfer die correctly weighted counterfeit gold coins that are very difficult to detect. If you are shopping on ebay, I would ONLY buy certified gold, especially for coins that are worth multiples of melt

Could you list some examples of features that would distinguish a genuine coin like this (or at least I hope so, and it seems to be) from a well made fake? I love buying on ebay, but it is definitely a dangerous game.
