I bought a couple Seated halves this week for my type set. I really don't like Seated coins that much, but this one is growing on me. What grade would you all put on it?

AU-50 details cleaned.
Slight wear on head, knee, legs of eagle. Detail loss on left of eagle appears more due to strike as detail is strong on the other side.

I was thinking it was cleaned also. How much would be taken away from this coin if it is cleaned?

Quote: I was thinking it was cleaned also. How much would be taken away from this coin if it is cleaned? It depends on the severity, but it looks fairly harsh on this one so I would say more than half the original value is lost. Sorry. Very nice coin otherwise and I agree with AU details.

I agree with the AU+ grade. It's a very nice looking coin and many of these 19th century silvers will slab problem-free unless the cleaning was abrasive.
I'd value this coin at close to $200 as is. $150 at least.

I ended up paying $90 to my dealer, mostly because of the cleaning, but the details in hand look very good, like the post have been saying I felt it was AU details.

2010 Red Book lists this 1858 Seated Liberty half dollar at $100 for EF-40 condition and $225 for an AU-50. With a mintage of 4,225,700, it's not particularly rare but this one is nice! I would agree with an AU determination with minimal wear. Cleaning doesn't help but we've all seen much worse cleaning than this one. I would certainly pay $90 for this! You did well!

Unfortunately, that's not just cleaned, that's harshly cleaned and easily knocks the coin down at least two full grades in value.

There appear to be lots of fine vertical hairline scratches, especially on the reverse. Presumably the coin was vigorously wiped using an up-and-down motion. It looks like some retoning has taken place which softens the appearance of the damage a little. It remains a problem coin with value much below that of a no-problem AU-50 example. The $90 price tag was maybe not too bad, but only if you are OK with the defects. Defect-free AU Seated halves are available although they will come with a higher price tag.
