Recently picked up another Colonial. Unfortunately, the guy I purchased it from stored it in a plasticized flip for who knows how long. There does not seem to be any PVC damage evident on the surfaces however, it does smell of plastic. How long would you soak this guy? I am considering TPG. Thanks in advance. swcoin.ecrater.com

You can't tell with pictures. The coin appears normal in all aspects with NO residue evident. Just that strong plasticized flip smell.

If there is not obvious residue, a short dunking in xylene should do the trick for that old copper.

Both plus water! Start with acetone for a couple hours, then water to neutralize any acids, then xylene which is the best solvent for copper.

Acetone, if you can smell the plastic. 15-20 minutes, then swish in fresh and give it a couple hours in the second soak. Swish again, rinse in good water and then xylene.

I swished around in acetone only for about a minute and the plastic smell is gone. Surfaces look good. I don't believe any damage was done by pvc, like I said, just the smell. Anyway, smell gone and coin looks good. Enough done?

Very likely. You caught it early. I should mention, I am over-the-top anal about these things; generally you can do about a third of what I suggest and still get a good result.

I recommed a water soak still to neutralize any residual acid. Give it an hour in DI water, rinse with acetone, pat dry and put it in a holder.

If you rinse with acetone there is no need to pat dry, it will dry on its own in a matter of seconds.
