I did some looking around the forums but didn't find a specific thread on this topic - apologize if I missed it or if this is in the wrong place.
I am picking up the hobby again after 15 years and it seems there are a multitude of grading services out there. Is there a particular one that is "best" or is that a relative question in itself?
I have a few coins that are from NGC but I have no idea if there is value - perceived or otherwise - in it being grade by PCGS for example.
Thanks,

And of course, as soon as I post I see the Third Party Grading forums... aye... (slaps forehead)
Nothing to see here folks, move along - as have I. :-)

No need to apologize, I'm sure. If I didn't catch you elsewhere, let me say

As far as Reputation and what the market bears the order goes:
1: PCGS 2: NGC 3: ANACS 4: ICG
In that order and everything else is considered worthless by most. There are *some* who recognize SEGS and PCI, but I'm personally not comfortable with them. If you stick with those four you can't go wrong.

Brian Mc, thanks for the welcome!
USArmyParatrooper - thanks for your reply. That is exactly what I was looking for on my question. Very much appreciated.

Where does SGS fit into the grading scheme?

Quote: Where does SGS fit into the grading scheme? Feeding off the bottom. Grading pocket change. They'd have been out of business years ago if all coin collectors understood grading. As it is, there are enough newbies for them to continue making money with their morally-bankrupt practice.

Wow SuperDave, don't hold back now. :-)
In all seriousness, your words are pretty strong and I have no reason to doubt then as a newbie... but why such strong words? What makes them "morally-bankrupt"?
Thanks,

SGS puts low quality coins in slabs marked MS70 & sells them to people that are too inexperienced to know the difference. If having a business model that heavily relies on cheating newbies isn't morally bankrupt what is?

Ahhh.... Thanks trd for the explanation. That would make sense on why SuperDave's opinion was so strong. It is unfortunate that there are companies that do this kind of stuff - gives the others a bad name in a way. Like that in every business/hobby unfortunately.

Well I'm glad I read this thread, I now know what to look out for and what companies can be trusted. I'm pretty new at the grading subject myself. Thanks

Thanks Yeah, if a seller proclaims "MS-65!" and the coin is in some nobody slab... don't buy a single thing off of him because he has no integrity. At the last show I went to I had some dealer try to win brownie points off of a boiler room slabbed coin. He said, "The slab says MS65 but I disagree. I consider the coin to be AU. Now how many dealers will you find that will say that about a certified coin!?" I chuckled and said, "And who is this grading company? I would think all dealers would unless they want to drive away business.

I feel there are only 2 grading companys that I would trust with a high dollar purchase. First, of course is PCGS; and a distant second is NGC.
