My wife and I are of Lithuanian decent and we like to raise our children with their history. I have always had 1 Lithuanian coin I had purchased for each family member , including extended. Now I would like to have a nice uncirculated set of coins from this time period. I often see XF examples offered on the bay and recently I have been in contact with someone.
I was wondering if someone here could tell me what a complete set would consist of ? And perhaps a value in uncirc? I understand from the seller there are 13 coins in the 3 year set with a cataloug value of over $350. She is offering them to me for $250. She is sending me scans today. I'll post them. I really want an uncirc. set and I dont see them ever offered but I don't know whare to look either.
I will be away in Boston for the weekend but any help or advice would be appreciated. Joe

Are you referring to the issues of 1925 and 1936 or something more recent? As a kid, I was interested in the coinage of the three Baltic States during their brief existance as independent countries.

I still buy Baltic coins when I run into them.

I would concur that true uncirculated examples are difficult to locate. That is due in part to the metals involved. Lithuania issued Aluminum-Bronze, Bronze and silver coins - not Nickel or copper-nickel issues like many other countries in the 1920s and 1930s. That coupled with the intervention of WWII caused many of the coins to be preserved in less than perfect condition.

According to the Krause catalogue, there are 14 coins issued by Lithuania in the Inter-War years:
1925: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 centu, 1, 2, 5 litai (8 coins)
1936: 1, 2, 5 centai, 5, 10 litu (5 coins)
1938: commemorative 10 litu for the 20th anniversary of independence (1 coin).

CV for the lot in XF is $152, in Unc a whopping $508.

Lithuania is one of those countries you just don't see Unc coins from, I guess. There is a 1925 "mint set" listed, containing two each of the coins from 1 centas to 50 centu (10 coins). Mintage of the set not given, CV for the set $1000.

Great info thanks. If the coins are nice sounds like a fair price.

I received some images finally from Svetlana. I just sent off an e-mail about the 1925 5 cent coin missing image.(She responded fast) I think I see PVC on 1 coin and whare PVC has possibly etched onto another prior to being cleaned leaving the surface black whare the PVC was. She describes the set as au/uncirc. For $250 this may be a good jumping off point and I can upgrade individual coins if I see them come available.
I would appreciate comments either way from all.

That's a sweet set; better than anything I've seen around here. The best I have is a 1925 10 centu sold to me as "cleaned EF" - looks like it's been whizzed or something, though it could just be the peculiar way the alloy has aged.

My three other old Lithuanian coins are well and truly circulated.

It might be a good bargain there. Indeed it is a difficult set to come across, not only to buy but also to sell off because of the lack of interest! But I believe that is to change as ex-soviet nations coins are starting to become more popular with the younger generations of their own home country.

Well I received the coins yesterday. Took a good look. I have to say I am impressed with the quality. I have already upgraded the 1936 10 LITU because of the mark in fron of his face. The rest of the coins are much nicer in hand then the pics. show.
