I must be crazy; should have my last franklin in the mail tomorrow to complete a pretty high grade set. Also working on several other sets that should be enough for now, but noooooo, what I am working on is not enough. It only seems right that since I was born on the day Eisenhower was elected president, I should start a set of Ike's. Well got my Dansco in the mail yesterday with a 72S silver proof; bought my second proof tonight at a coin club auction (my first visit to the club). Needless to say, I am not very focused but having alot of fun. Edited by jprine 12/22/2009 12:45 am

jprine, I know what you mean about not being focused. Currently I'm collecting Ottoman Empire silver and copper coins, Imperial German and Third Reich issues, older Mexican silver and I'm considering saving up for a decent 1916 so I can start a Standing Liberty quarter set! As for the Ikes, I did a set of them last winter and I had a blast! It's a great set. Here's a question for you: Are you planning on including the 1971-D Friendly Eagle and the 3 1972-P types? I did, and it took some hunting, but it was definitely worth it when I found them. I'm always interested in how people approach their Ike sets.

TOZ-I am going to try to stick with pretty high quality coins since they are not very expensive. I have about 50 Ikes on hand (with the exception of the two proofs I just purchased)but they are all circulated and not quiet the quality I want in my set. I will be looking for the varieties and the FEV as I fill my holes. My first goal will be to complete the set; then I will spend more time on the more unusual coins. I really did not know about all of the varieties of the Ikes until I had already decided to complete the set. Subsequently, I began doing some research when I found all of the variety information. My first reason for beginning the set (as mentioned in first post on the topic) was that I was born on Nov 4, 1952, the date Ike was elected. As it turned out, I was almost named Dwight as was one of my boyhood friends that was born on 11-7-52. Any information or suggestions on my quest will be appreciated.

Well, normal Uncirculated Ikes aren't very expensive, but business strikes in high grades can be incredibly expensive, as these are hard to find in very high grades. Seems like it'll be a great set when completed, along with your other sets. Do you have pics of your Franklin half set?

I have been wanting to start a set of Ike's also. I have a binder that I keep 2X2's in for future sets. I have only a few Ike's that I put in it when I see a nice one. I have a mix collection of coins I am buying that should be here in a couple weeks. There is suppose to be a couple hundred from circulation and some business strike silver blue packs. I think these will give me a pretty good start on putting together a complete set. I am not sure how I will deal with all the varieties. First thought will do what ever slots are in the Dansco book. Please keeps us up to date on your progress of your set.

jprine-doing nice high grade pieces is definitely the way to go. Where I could, I got Mint Set pieces for the circulation strikes. Sadly, I couldn't do that for the 1971 and 1972 strikes, but fortunately my local dealer who is also a good friend of mine gets a ton of Ike dollars in his shop all the time, and once he saw me buying all of those 1970's Mint Sets, he set aside nice BU examples of the 1971 and 1972 coins for me. The lowest grade coin I have is my 1972 type 2 which is an ANACS AU58 that I bought here on the forum. I managed to cherrypick 2 Friendly Eagles from ebay, and both came back from ANACS as MS64s. I even broke up my own proof sets to make sure my proofs were nice and fresh, and if toned they were attractive. GoldRush-You should definitely do a set of Ikes! They're one of the most fascinating and fun U.S. Modern series! As for the varieties, I got a blank Danco dollar album rather thaan the pre printed Ike album with the intent of including all of the varieties. Which I did. But as I said above, I slabbed my Friendly Eagles and my 1972 type 2 as these are the keys to the set and they're worth a fair amount in good grades. So while those coins aren't in my album, it was nice to have spots for my 1972 Type 1 and 3. But ultimately it's up to you. Make the set you want, and that will provide you the most amusement. Ultimately, isn't thaat why we collect coins in the first place? And to both of you, keep us posted as to your progress. There are a lot of Ike fans here, and we're always up for looking at a new set!

My wife surprised me a few years ago with the last couple of missing Ike's for my collection...while not high grade, it's an accomplishment for me. Good luck with yours.

What's this 'friendly eagle' that everyone is talking about?
I have a few nice examples from this set but have yet to finish it. Picked them up a few years back, got distracted, and now they just set in a drawer all by them lonesome self. I think maybe i'll organize it and see what I got!
Good luck Jprine!

jprine - How are you doing on your progress? The box with the Ike's I have coming are still up in Michigan, waiting for some good weather for the drive down here to Florida. Reading up on the different varieties has be excited to get started. I am not sure what condition the ones I have coming are in, they say over a 100 loose and some blue pack BU silver still in the mint shipped boxes for at least a few of the years. I have never seen them, just being brought to me to be to look over and buy, or sell off.
Terror of Zanarkand - thanks for the advice, I may have some questions when I see what is there, hopefully in the next week.

I like Ike's and I have two sets one in a Dansco album and a certified set in an Eagle slab album. I have always liked the Ike dollars and especially the proofs. It's funny my girlfriend lives with me and when I was working on my collection one day several years ago she asked to see my sets. She instantly said I want to complete a collection of Ike dollars and she built a really nice set in a dansco album. Like someone else said above the high grade P & D's can be really pricey and become a factor in putting together a high end certified set that includes the type coins as well.

Good luck with your collection. I have several holes in my Ike collection. I am working now to just get everything organized and cataloged. Then watch out cause here I come to complete some sets.
