I was up at a coin collector's booth today and he has three of the 2nd released 2009 lincoln cents, that are doubled dies. Needless to say, I was very intrested, and had to see them myself, so I looked under a magnifying glass, and they were indeed legititmate. Licoln's thumb is doubled, its hard to see without a magnifying glass, but it is a clear doubled die, and they were beautiful to say the least. Has anyone else came accross these yet? whats your opinion? will they be another popular doubled die such as the 1955 and 1972's ? or do you think these are going to be more rare?

Umm, well...let's see.

Chances are nil that they will be as popular as the 1955 or 1972 doubled dies - mainly because of lack of visibility. The other two aforementioned doubled dies can be seen with the eyes nearly shut in a dark room. The 2009 dies still take magnification for most people to discern.

The biggest problem with the 2009 doubled dies is that they are crawling out of the woodwork - over 100 different dies identified to date, and the number would likely climb if anyone wanted to take the time to pick through a couple million more of them. Experience dictates, however, that most people are already tired of them, and it's not even 2010 yet. Chances are they won't hold much long term value. They will always carry a premium, but nothing like the major doubled dies.
