Are these lines die cracks or severe polishing or gouges? One line runs from the 1st T in STATES through the statue and ends at the N in CENT.

They are gouges on the die. Somewhat common, and I am not exactly sure what causes the or why. I believe it is Feeder Finger Damage.

I have one that looks very similar and I don't understand a couple of thins,1)is it damage to the die or to the planchet? Since the lines go UNDER the coin detail they were there BEFORE the strike occurred, correct? 2.)Is this the reason you think they are from the feeder fingers? Thanks for helping me understand what it is I am looking at.

Feeder fingers are the mechanism that feeds the planchets to the dies. Sometimes one will scrape across a die face, leaving long parallel scratches. Any mark you see going under design detail will not be post-mint damage as it would be impossible to do without disturbing the devices.

Here is a pic of my 1998 cent with the lines on it. Note, the lines run under the memorial and other coin details (even behind Abe!) Wouldn't the pressure of the strike remove them if they were on the planchet? How would feeder fingers abrade the die?

Biokemist, thanks for the response! After your explanation I see how it could be feeder fingers since they would Not scratch the recessed parts of the die, which would be the details.
