Several firsts for me. Bought my first CC Morgan last week. After a closer look when I got it home, I thought it might be a VAM (my first). After I checked VAM World, I am pretty convinced that it is. My next first-got a new digital microscope for Christmas tonight (I know it is early, but going to travel to kids house for Christmas). Anyway, this is my first attempt at using it. My question-does anyone agree that it is a VAM 6? I will never get to sleep again with the addition of my new toy! Thanks!

Yeah, I think you can put this one to bed. Between the doubled leaves and unique mint mark location, VAM-6 is quite obvious. Nice to have a Top 100 as your first Carson City Morgan.

Hey guys, I am new to collecting coins but I really like the Morgan dollars.
Could you tell me based on the photos that you have there, what the difference between a regular Morgan and what makes this coin in the photo a VAM 6 ?
Thank You.

Terry,

First, all Morgan and Peace dollars are VAMs. Leroy VanAllen and George Mallis devised a system to catalogue the numerous obverse and reverse die marriages used on these coins. There are new marriages discovered frequently and these are catalogued and numbered. Leroy VanAllen is in his 90's but still with us. George Mallis passed over a decade ago. Leroy is the oracle of knowledge and absolute authority when determining if dies are sufficiently different from others to warrant their own designation or just a sub-set of an already identified die.

When dies are put into use they change from wear, accidently clashing, re-tooling and re-polishing. If the changes are significant, these will earn a distinct VAM number. That's why we sometimes say that common clashes (without a letter transfer) or die cracks in and of themselves don't earn a distinct status.

There are well over a thousand VAMs already identified. Most are common and add no value to the coin. Others are exceedingly rare and have collector interest ... these make moon money.

Take a trip over to VAMWorld.com and click on "Morgan VAMs by Date" to get a taste.

Caution: VAMming is a disease and currently there is no known cure!
