Hi everyone, I am new to coins and was looking for some opinions of other coin collectors. Do you buy for just the fun of collecting or do you buy coins for the investment potential? or both? If you buy for the investment side of things then what return do you get? For those of you who know who I am please do not tell my hubby I posted here. I am doing indepedant research  Heather |

I buy for the hobby. I really like coins and collecting them. But with that said most of what I have been buying recently is silver dollar. Mainly because I like the look of them, But I guess with those it is somewhat of a investment. but I do not plan on ever selling them but if money got to tight and need some money for a emergency then I could get money out of it. But the main reason is that I collect is just for fun and not make money off of them. I would someday love to sell coins for a living but as of now I collect for the love of coin with no intection of selling any of the ones I currently have

both most I collect coins is where the country I'm in now for the reason that it is a history for me money or coin is not simply a tool for trade but their is a story for every coin that comes out in the circulation or been pulled out, once its out in circulation it is already history for me it is one of the physical evidence that can be look on what are the things that can be learn on that country or union of country their rise and fall

Well initially it was hobby--then it turned into an investment, but lately I again feel like it IS my hobby--Even when gold/silver prices peaked IYW, I held onto everything--did't sell a plugged nickel--Then bottom fell a little--making come back now--will I sell when it peaks again? Donno, if I was an investor, why did I not sell when gold was over $700?  Silver over $15? I held on to EVERYTHING--Therefore, I thought I was an investor, but in my heart, I THINK I am a collector--I think---   |

For me it's a fun, interesting and educational hobby I enjoy history and collecting coins make it so much more fun and interesting. |

Mooseknuckle...That was good  It is strictly a hobby for me. Its actually something that is quite challenging to me also (I get bored real easy)[:p] |

Some things are strictly for a collection and some things are to capitalize on an increase in value.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

It's definitley a hobby for me,and a healthy one too,it's helped relax me and my blood pressure.But in the future it will be my sons investment.sn31.

I believe that you will find that most of us are collectors of the coins themselves for the Numismatics of them. I, personally, collect for both reasons. First, because they are fascinating (and addictive) and two, they are excellent for a long term investment portfolio as well. It's difficult to calculate the long term % of return due to the obvious market fluctuations and years of investment. I don't recall a coin per se that has lost value (other than cleaned coins ofcourse and investments of high dollar such as Gold). "Cleaned" coins may also increase in value using the Coin Conservation group (see previous thread).
Our Portfolio consists of 50% Gold Bonds, which have taken quite a hit this week and 50% in collectible coins.
I suppose that I could calculate the return from my 20-30 year old Value guides to current value, but oh my what a project that would be.
I hope that this helps your research from my perspective. Others may have lost $ for $ on a particular coin but, that has not been my experience.

It is a hobby for me as well. I love to get new coins from other countries and study them, looking at the great detail put into it. Since I started collecting coins I have not sold one. My collection is getting bigger by the year.....It is almost time to move up a size on my safe.. My youngest son is starting to show interest in collecting coins too. I gave him my doubles and we sit down 2 nights a week and go over them. Its great fun.

It is very much a hobby for me, but when I need a buck, I am not hesitant to sell a coin that I have a couple of. I also think that it is an investment because, especialy for precios metal coins, the prices will never drop, think about it, in the last year, gold prices have skyrocketed, if the coin loses value, the price of the gold will keep it from really losing any value. that is, as long as nobody ever tuns lead into gold, then, the gold value of a coin is doomed.

It is definitely a hobby for me !! Since my collection is 99.9% raw , and many of my coins that mean the most to me were actually taken from circulation or given to me by other collectors , and forum members !! or won in a catman contest !!

Both here.
I have a supplier that gives me very, very good prices on coins. So whatever does not fit my collection wants, and I feel like I can make a couple bucks on it, I will buy it in hopes of selling it to make a couple bucks, and put that towards my collection wants.
The hobby part of it, I really enjoy looking for varieties, and cherrypicking. It brings great satisfaction to me cherrypicking something. But since I am not a error/variety collector, I normally sell it off.
So... both.
