I found a really nice looking 1947 nickel in my change yesterday. Looks almost uncirculated. The nickel has some grease on it, not smeared or rubbed in, but on its surface. It also appears to have errors on it but it's hard to make them out because of the grease. I'm thinking about using a little lighter fluid. I really want to remove the grease. Does any one have any ideas or suggestions on this? I would REALLY appreciate it.

Good luck to everyone in the 1,000 member contest!![:)

Hi thingee

Im opposed to cleaning coins with any method !!

But as a starter for discussion, I would stay away from any solvent or petroleum based products.

maybe a soak in some warm water with a mild dish washing detergent, and then a rinse in distilled water, air dry, no rubbing.

or if all else fails, forget it in your pocket when you wash your cloths .

I tell you I found a nickel in the washer the other day it was clean !!!

see my first comment !!!

NEVER, EVER USE ANYTHING ELSE, OTHER THAN ACETONE TO REMOVE GUNK!!! If acetone doesn't do it, it is highly unlikely to be of organic material.

Acetone is one of the main components in nail polish, although I don't recommand you to use it. You should go to a paint store to get some.

go to your local photo store and get a lens cloth, if the grease is not to bad. if its really bad, get a cotton swap with some achohol and disolve the grese. imediatly wipe it down with a lens cloth.

I've never used acetone on nickels but I have however used it on my morgans and have had them graded afterwards and wasnt sent home in a bodybag. I'm not sure about how it would work for the nickel but did a great job for me

I agree with Rick...best not to clean the coin at all!!!
Acetone can be used as a degreaser, but it should be 100% pure acetone if possible. Try not to use a brush on it either.
Acetone itself does not react with silver or nickel by itself. However if acetone is left on a copper coin (or possibly a coin containing large amounts of copper) and left out in light it can be broken down into acetic acid which can damage your coin.

Better safe than sorry!
Hope this helps

I am against cleaning coins, when I try to buy a coin I make sure it hasn't been cleaned. To me if you clean it you wash away all of it's history. I wouldn't dare wash my morgans!

After reading the post replies and considering each one I've decided NOT to clean the nickel. Thanks y'all. I'm certain I would have cleaned it otherwise. [:0]
