I wouldn't go that far just because the letters on liberty is not sharp enough and theres too much wear to go EF.So I'd say VF.

Cleaned, as well - there are places where crud should still be sticking but isn't, if it's still sticking to the places that it is.

My Mom gave me all of her Mercury dimes that she had kept since the 20's and some of them, although circulated, still have most of the mint luster. I know that they had not been cleaned. Is it possible that this coin has been kept away from air and so forth and that's why it looks as though it had been cleaned? I would say VF also due to multiple scratches however, most design markings are clear - i.e., eyelashes, nose, lips and it has good strong markings on the Reverse. Perhaps a high VF?

Hi dsking
The closeup of liberty (which is one of the details that IMO keep the coin in the median VF grade) is unmistakable as abrasive cleaning.
The hairline scratches all going in the same direction across the coin as well as the other photo's showing the areas within the design detail where polishing cannot get to retaining the debris of circulation and age.all point to cleaned on this coin.
Merc's are among my favorite coins, please feel free to share pics of them !!

I bought it off ebay for 7.00 about 3 months ago but I just got my Digital Microscope last week and wanted to post the picture to see if I had been taken as a sucker. Now that I looked at it close up I can see it looks cleaned. Sure did look sweet on the ebay pictures when I bought it. Thanks for everyones opinion.

Hi Tpatna I have had the very same experiance, I'm sure most people who shop ebay with any regularity have !! and its not just cleaning that can be missed in the pics on ebay, even good pics,, I have in front of me right now a 1943-S Merc that I just bought not long ago,, That is a great example of how things can be missed in a photo, with the coin in hand and a second look at the photo, I should have seen it, but I didnt, not the sellers fault, its my fault in this instance.2 moderate hits on the obverse, that will keep this coin at MS-62 ,,I thought I had a deal with this coin at MS-63 with a shot at 64 very similar cost , mine was 7.95 Rick

Thanks Rick. I don't have much experience with cleaned coins. So your noticing the hairline scratches going in the same direction are a great clue for me to watch out for. Also, the low spots being an indication is something I hadn't noticed.
I'll try to post pics as soon as I can figure out why my scanner keeps making them look "unreal" to me and little blobs. This is one shortfall I have in my collecting - a decent way to photograph. My 35MM just doesn't cut it. Maybe I'll try it with a Macro.
Thanks Rick!
