I have collected for years, but only actively for the past year. I have only been studying coins and really learning for a year. I would rate myself as a novice with a serious addiction.

I've been collecting for about 35 years, on and off (more off than on). For classifying myself I'd choose d. none of the above. There's too big a leap between novice and master. I'd say I am an amateur (as opposed to professional) collector, and I'd like it to stay that way.

Collecting coins since early 2007. Definitely a novice in most sets, but a bit better with Lincolns.
I've always collected something, but coins are great because there is so much to learn!

Novice. I have so much to learn! This year I intend to concentrate on complete sets and completing the sets I started. Invest more in rare coins/Key dates more than this last year. I still intend to keep up with the newly minted products (2010). Now that the rush of buying just to have decent start is over, I intend to buy more books to study the coins I may want.
Take care, Tim

I would say that I am a master (though I am not quite certain how this is defined in comparison to expert). I started hoarding some older coins about 16 years ago, but only came down with numismatic fever in 2000. For the first couple of years I focused upon US coins since they were what I was used to. In the latter half of 2002 I got a bit frustrated by rising prices of US coins (not to mention the high prices for coins with high mintages compared to many world coins), so I took a break until the summer of 2003. Since then I have been a darksider, and have been reading as much as possible, which led me to this forum a couple of years ago. Due to this reading of monographs and learning much from the other users on this forum, I now am able to impress many dealers with my knowledge of world coins...to the point of it being baffling so some. haha. So I think that I many be just a numismatic master, but I do wish to attain apotheosis and become an expert at some point.

Collector for the past, almost 38 years now but a student of numismatics for 6 years before that. (no money to collect so all I could do was study)
I'm not sure what a master or expert collector means, but I would say I am an advanced collector. My collection is extensive and it is difficult to find items in my areas of interest that I do not already have.

Probably about 22 years technically, but 8 years or so in reality. I started as a kid and joined the local coin club and built up a decent collection and a fair bit of knowledge over the course of 7 years or so. Then when I went off to college lost interest in numismatics and had my parents hold onto my collection for safe keeping. Just this past year I've started getting interested again and am shaking off the rust on my old knowledge as well as learning new things.
As for the second question, I guess I'd consider myself a master collector under your system since I think I'm more than a novice, but I'm hardly an expert. I wish you had called it something else though, maybe something like knowledgeable collector or journeyman collector as I don't feel like a "master" of numismatics.

a. novice if I had to pick.
I started collecting with my dad in the 1970's when you could still find silver coins in circulation regularly.
My older sister saved her pennies and had thousands of wheat pennies which nobody thought much about at that time.
I started collecting again 2 1/2 years ago at a "gun show" that had a lot of coins on hand. Got the gold bug then went back into Lincolns.

I have been collecting for 23 years now. As a 'collector' I would say I am a master, as I have a pretty comprehensive collection. As a 'numismatist' I would say I am advanced, as I am more knowledgeable than a novice, but not a master.
