I am looking through rolls of pennies I got at the bank the other day. I found a 1989 that had a strange looking date. I just need to ask a question, the 8 seems to be doubled, so I was wondering how could only one number in the date be that way? Or am I seeing something that is not a big deal. I know pics would help but I can't seem to get clear pics up close. Thanks,

Wornslick

Thanks tumbleweedtrumpet. I didn't see anything there that looks like this. Some were close. I am looking at the mint mark which is a D. The up and down part of the D isn't very wide and the top part of the curve isn't either. I guess I need to take it to the local coin shop.

I have seen many examples of the doubling that you are seeing. in fact the 89-D cent is the coin I have set into my reference set and it shows triple images on some devices.

its Machine Doubling and is caused by Die Deterioration and die chatter. how one number or device can show this type of doubling is strange but it appears happen most often on lincoln cents, Kennedy half dollars and Jefferson nickels seem to have a greater number of coins like this or at least that has been my expericance.

Thanks for the info Metalman. I think I will add it to my collection. Thats what I find interesting, how only one number is like that. Of course the mint mark is wierd looking and this morning I see the 9 looks slighty double.
