I have been playing with my new Christmas toy (digital microscope) and found what I think to be a die crack. Am I correct? Thanks!

Great picture, could you tell me more about your microscope, like what kind it is, where you got it and how much it cost? I am looking to buy one soon but am not knowlegable about them, but that seems to take great pics. I don't have a lot of money to spend but still would like one that takes good photos.
That does look like a die crack but I am just a beginner myself and can't say for sure.
Thank You

Terry863-The micro is a Celestron Model#44306. Bought it on the internet (just do a search) for $99. I have just had it for a couple of days. It is alot of fun looking at my coins-I am finding things that had not seen before. I really have to work on the lighting, this model allows you to make some adjustments with the onboard lights, but I still have alot of work to do. If you go to the photography thread on the forum, you can get alot of information about digital microscopes. That is what got me interested (and then hooked). Good luck!

jprine ... is it a die crack, absolutely. Is it significant to any rarity or increase in value, not really. It's just interesting. If you're interested in finding the rarities, look for die breaks. Cracked dies were retained in service and many coins were minted with them. But, once they had a break (where metal is displaced and fields were elevated or recessed) that's when they were removed from service. Usually very few coins were struck with broken dies. Some of the fantastic rim Cuds you see are examples.

Here's an example of an extreme break and definitely one to look for (1888-O VAM 1B4 "Scarface") ... courtesy of VAMWorld. com

Nice and interesting coin SeatedNut, Is the scarface VAM only on the 1888-0 coin or can it be found on different Morgan dollar dates as well?
Thank You.

terry,

That's the only "Scarface" Morgan. There are other notable die breaks in the series: 1887-P VAM 1A Donkeytail; 1880-P VAM 1A Knobbed 8; 1891-P VAM 2A Double Ear and Mustache Die Break.

There are some spectacular die breaks in the Peace dollar series as well: 1922-P VAMs 1F,2A, 2C, 2E, 5A and 12A; 1923-P VAMs 1A/B/C/D and E are a few.
