While laying around fat, dumb and happy (and full of turkey and dressing) on Christmas eve, there was a show on similar to one of the home shopper channel, but it was all coins. They were really pushing the new national park series. There deal was this: each shipment would include a P & D of each coins released on that date, a nice display book (similar to a dansco) and a roll of each (two park series each shipment). You would also get (in 2010 and 2011) a wooden, glass top box to display the rolls. Each shipment would cost $39.95 plus $9.95 shipping. If I figured right, the total costs would be in excess of $2500.00 Sounded pretty high to me. Anyone else see the program....what did you think? I think I will pass.

I saw the same thing. I will be getting mine from the mint, I don't need a pretty glass case. Yes, it looks expensive.

They may find themselves in trouble not being able to get the "first day of issue" coins. Unlike the State Quarters, the Fed is not permitting the banks to special order the National parks quarters so they will not be sitting on hand at the banks for issuing on the first official day of issue. The fed says that bank orders will be filled with whatever quarter happen to be on hand, circulated first and then Uncs.

The National Parks aren't known to a majority of people, thus the interest will be minimal. How many different mountain ranges will look the same? The only one that interests me is the 2012 New Mexico Chaco Canyon.

I just saw the list of designs... and the Devil's Tower Monument didn't make the list?!?! It was the very first national monument! And I also was taking a look at some of the other designs and I noticed that according to this new series the Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey, which I find odd since it is on Ellis island in New York harbor and was the official New York Immigration Station. And the best thing they came up with for DC ... The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT... Yeah he was important but how about one of the War Memorials, Ford's Theater, the White House maybe? Or Possibly the Smithsonian?!?!?! I am depressed

Well, they never really do appoint numismatists to top tier positions at the Mint or Treasury, do they?

I mean the coin could be ugly as all get out but I figure they would at least be semi smart about it. I mean a national park historian should probably have been consulted. And maybe a Jr. High geography teacher?

You are mixing up two locations Ellis Island is in New York and it was the official New York Immigration Station. The Statue of Liberty is on Bedloe Island (Later called Liberty Island) and IS part of New Jersey even though the island is in New York Harbor.

From the National Park Service website: "The Statue of Liberty National Monument is one park that is comprised of Liberty Island ( where the Statue is located) and Ellis Island, the historical federal immigration processing center."

Apparently it's not a mistake, since most of Ellis Island is part of New Jersey too... The original island was in New York, but then they created a larger man-made portion attached to the original island, so it's now mostly in Jersey water. But maybe there's not much else for Jersey to put on a national park monument without Ellis Island.
