I find no mention of this pitting in the Morgan & Peace Ency. This coin is out of a GSA holder. The outer rim is pitted and arouns the Motto there is a lot of raised metal. The dentiles are also (funky)
It looks like a heavly used Rev die that was pitted

its from rusted dies allot of Morgans have this pitting characteristics on them because moisture formed on the dies and the rust made the pitting so when they struck the coin you could see where the pitting was on the dies. Some of them are so bad it is the main characteristic to tell what VAM it is

This coin is out of a GSA holder

Please tell me you didn't remove a 80/79-CC from a GSA holder. That is a beautiful coin by the way but do not send it to be graded by anyone but NGC (if it is still in the GSA Holder) because it will always be a GSA as long as its in the holder but as soon as its out of that holder its just like any other 80/79-CC Morgan and loses any premium the GSA would bring

I picked up a 1880,1881 and an 1885 CC all 3 case's where cracked (not broken open)I then fully removed them. But I only paid 1100.00 for all 3. I think I did OK

The pitting you see looks like 'orange peel' to me that is consistent with a worn die.

I picked one of these up today. It has the same pitting as pictured above. The GSA enclosure looks like crap and I was considering a PCGS change-out. They seem to bring as much or more premium than the GSA, however I did not find any successful searches for the VAM 4 top 100 designation in past auction results on Heritage or ebay. The brown hue on the lower left obv is a bag stain. nlp
