...was very pleased with their response. My children were born in 1996, 1998, and 2001 and I wanted to give them proof sets for Christmas. As you may or may not know the two earlier sets are quite cheap, I got them for $8 each at a dealer I dropped in on out of town a couple months ago. The 2001 on the other hand is somewhat of an anomaly in the set pricing structure, with the 10 coin set shown on numismedia as $84 compared to $14-15 for the other two. I was fortunate enough to pick one up on ebay for $42 after shipping. Anyway, I've just picked up collecting in the last several months and one of my two sons (the middle child) has taken up the hobby pretty aggressively, sitting at the table with me while roll searching, going to the local coin club meeting with me, putting together sets of his own, even riding along with me as we went half dollar hunting this weekend. The older child thought it looked like fun, but after the holes were filled in his Lincoln folder, decided he had better things to do than worrying about upgrading them. (I know quite a shock for a 13 year old to have better things to do.) So my oldest son comes into our bedroom after everyone is in bed last night, and wants to talk to Dad, so obligingly I wander over to his room to see what's on his mind. He says, "Dad, I'm sorry I haven't been coin collecting with you lately." with a tone of voice that is clear he thinks he's majorly disappointed me. I assured him it was not a big deal (gave me another set of books to plug away on) and that I knew it wasn't for everyone. Then with his voice cracking and fighting back tears says, "Would you pick up a box of pennies for me tomorrow?" Ahhh...who knew giving my kids birth year proof sets for Christmas would "convict" another would be numismatist!

Great story! My son is only 20 months old. I have been setting things aside for him, hoping to one day spark an interest in the hobby.

I have no kids, so I give the neighbors 10 year old boy coins, rolls, proof sets. He doesn't appear to have taken the hook yet. I started at 10 and couldn't get to the bank fast enough. Different generations, different interests perhaps.

I've tried to get my kids into collecting, but to no avail. I have bought them proof and mint sets of their birth years and other coins which I might just give them when they move out of the house.

My son just turned 1. Like everything else, I wont force it upon him, but i'll sure do what everyone else is doing and buy them sets every year and set things aside for him etc. Great story, sounds like everyone is enjoying it. Yeah that dumb 2001 set is expensive for the 2001 Sac I think.

Great Story! I have two kids, ages 3 and 1, so hopefully soon my oldest one might start to gain some real interest, it would be a great way to spend some quality time with them.

My son is 16 months old. I'm setting aside wheaties and pre-1960 Jeffersons for him if he is interested in the hobby.

Thanks for the comments all. I failed to mention my daughter (2001) was most impressed by the fact that her set had 10 coins, and was more valuable that the boys' sets. Made me feel good again last night that the boys were still walking around with their proof sets admiring the coins, and noticing small things on the proofs they'd not noticed on circulated coins. I asked my daughter what she did with hers. She says I put it up top of my closet. I was a little disappointed at that, until she says she has a box up there of "things she wants to keep forever." Oh yeah...she gets it!

Thanks for the story. I have always wanted to share my hobby with family. I have two daughters 3 and 4 years old. I have put a couple things aside for them, like a proof set of the year I was born (79), a Morgan dollar, a columbian commemorative half, which I have not given them yet. What I have given them is a blank harris album that holds 2x2's, and I give them coins with animals on them to fill it up. The 3 year old was putting coins she got from her Grandmother into her piggy bank the other day and came running to me. She was excited to show me a coin with a castle on it.... It was a Maryland State Quarter. I thought it was awesome to think a three year old is already looking hard enough at her change to notice some are different. Maybe I will have some fellow coin collector in my household after all.

I know how it is for your oldest son. I am the only boy in my family of 5. I have two older sisters, so my dad never had anybody to talk to about his hobby(model airplanes). When I was younger, I would sometimes feel horrible that I was not taking an interest in my dads hobbies. It was hard. Just let your son(dylan, I assume) know that is okay that he has his own interests and make up some story about how you also did not enjoy your own fathers(his grandfathers) hobbies.
Just a piece of advice from an 18yr old.

Neither of my children (26 & 28) have much interest in collecting. I have been buying my first grandchild (11 months) lots of stuff. I hope to hook him when he is a little older. My daughter and son-in-law did seem a little interested in a 1 oz silver coin I got my grandson with "baby first Christmas" on it. I cant wait to start working on him with some old buffalos, etc.

Thanks for the story DylansDad. When my father passed in Feb, he left behind 8 grandchildren. Their ages range from 23 to 9. This year for Christmas, I put together 16 Lincoln Cent Whitman folders. 8 #2's, and 8 #3's. The majority of the wheaties in the #2 folder were pulled from "Poppy's" collection. I filled the #3's with the very best coins I could find via roll-searching. I left the 2009 slots empty on purpose, figuring it would give the kids something to search for. Yesterday evening, I received a call from my sis-in-law. My 10 year old niece had found some 2009's, and didn't know what varieties she had, and which ones she was missing. Seems I've managed to "hook" at least one so far...

I loved the story DylansDad! My first kid is due in June. My wife doesn't know it yet, but I will certainly be introducing he/she to the Coin World as soon as they are old enough to start answering questions!!
