Well yesterday was a first for me. One of my coin dealing friends did two coin shows this month and did a deal to purchase a type set at the first show and purchased them at the second.
I got to hold in my hands numerous coins I have never seen. This included a 1909 s vdb and a 1955 double die and the oldest American coin I have ever seen, a 1795 ? large cent.
Imagine if you will a very small box with about 50 coins in flips in it with some of the finest examples of rare coins with increadably low mintages (especially for condition) I have ever seen. Retail value of this small box was in excess of $150,000.00. The man who put the collection together spent 18 years doing so and had an eye (and pocket book) to match it.

All of the coins had been in slabs and removed to be put into a dansco book. When he sold his collection to my friend THAT COST HIM MONEY. This is why I encourage people to never crack out old rare coins just to fill holes in a book.
These coins will again be slabbed into pcgs holders by my friend. When the previous owner cracked them out most graded at ms 64 and better. Hopefully they will still grade the same when my friend sends them in assuming the plastic in the books did not damage the coins when it slid across their faces.
Some of the coins included.....

Indian Head centThese were the coins I pulled for special attention in the hopes I could afford one or two of them. Unfortunately after viewing my reference guides when I got back to my reference material it does not look like I will be adding any of these to my inventory anytime soon. I would have to sell the house and starve the wife and kids. As tempting as that is I would not want to face my hungry and ticked off family.....

Anyway I sure enjoyed the experience! This experience reminded me that buying the best you can afford over time DOES pay off with either a spectacular collection or a big payoff. Either option is fine with me!! Sincerely, John Leckrone
