I'd give the dime a F-12 and the quarter looks solid for VF-20 and possible for VF-25. Both coins appear original and attractive. The quarter definitely is toned but you could try an acetone rinse to see if some of the dark material comes off. My guess is that it won't help but it can't hurt.
Hopefully their bargain-bin status means you got them at a nice price. I like 'em!

My bad... I meant quarter and not half. I'll try the acetone rinse and see if it helps at all.

isdsms, Definitely give that quarter a good, long acetone soak (don't do it inside - flamable and the fumes, etc) followed by a thorough rinse. It looks like that residue may be active PVC on the reverse. It will continue to corrode the coin's surface unless removed. The obverse looks like the damage may already be done. I use a round tootpick with softened tip to lightly pry the crud from crevices. This works best right after coming out of the acetone and while the crud is soft. Had a 1917 Walking Liberty half dollar that came back from PCGS as "PVC Residue" and not gradeable. Sent it back after the bath and it's now in a PCGS MS62 holder.

How long should I soak it? And rinse with water?

those are nice crusty original additions! And I agree with Jaobler on the grades.

I agree with F and VF. This quarter is nice. Try the acetone bath and see if it improves it any.

I also agree with F-12 and VF-20. I think the quarter might even go higher after a nice acetone bath.

Quote: How long should I soak it? And rinse with water? Soak it overnight and rinse about 30 seconds in tap water and finish with a quick distilled water rinse. Work on the crust caps right away before they can soften. You can rinse in between too! Good luck.

Well, here it is! The acetone did wonders for the reverse! It also cleared up the obverse a bit, revealing a nice big scratch. Glad I did it, but will the scratch fade in time? All and all, I think it looks much better, and still authentic.
