my wife and I picked up this coin a little while ago and I would like your input as to how you would grade this coin.

I would grade this coin at EF-40.

I was thinking between VF and EF also. I love this one year type and was really wanting a arrow/ray for my album but when you start getting in the grades I was looking for they are a little more expensive than their counterparts so I got what I could afford in the grades I was looking for but may change them out with A/R after the album is finished

I agree with the VF30 grade. It looks like a well struck piece with the obverse being choice very fine.

I'll split the difference and call it VF-35, but the pictures make it hard to tell if its cleaned.

Vf-30 also. Probably cleaned in the past, but not harshly. Nice coin!

I agree with a choice VF (but not quite EF) grade. The surfaces look pretty bright and they contrast with the darker areas within the date numerals and the space between Liberty's hand and staff. The overall look is that of a silver coin which has been dipped and has not yet re-toned much. For comparison, here is my 1853-O half which was graded EF-40 by PCI (in an old green holder). The PCI coin has a bit more detail in most areas. FYI, my coin has also been cleaned, or at least that's what NGC said when I tried to have it crossed! As is common in my experience with PCI, they are pretty accurate for detail grade. However, they often do not report cleaning or other surface problems which NGC and PCGS deem unacceptable for graded coins.
