I don't mind answering John. :) I paid $25 for it from my local dealer. I saw it and fell immediately in love with it.

Awesome! That is one of the best looking SMS quarters I have seen. Nice find!

That's really nice. I can certainly see the appeal. I think it's one of those things you will always want, but until you find "the one" (like this one) you don't want to buy one. Seems to be very nicely struck.

GothicFlorin, that's exactly right. I love SMS coins, but I don't own many for that reason. They're one of the things I end up searching for a long time for. This one is easily the best one I currently own. I'm going to send it off to ANACS here soon, I think. And thanks everyone for all the great feedback! This is why I love this forum, the great communication and feedback we give each other.

May I ask a question? Being new to coin collecting what is the story behind the "SMS"? why where they produced for so few year! Thanks!

There weren't any proof or mint sets made in 1965 1966 and 1967 so to satisfy collectors, special polished blanks ( and I think special preparation for the dies ) were struck and packaged in San Francisco to meet collector demands that would normally order mint and proof sets. These were not made the same way as proofs are.
The beautiful quarter above has a cameo appearance because it is one of the first few thousand minted.
There were more sets minted than needed, so these sets are still fairly inexpensive, but those with frosted or those having a cameo appearance are highly prized and worth a whole lot more. Some SMS sets will have one or two frosty coins in there if you are really lucky.
There were a very small number of 1964 SMS sets. They were experimental I think, for the planning and release of the following years. 1965 SMS sets tend to be the most sloppy of the three years and can be poorly struck and have numerous contact marks.
I am pretty sure my information is correct here.

Congrats on that beautiful quarter. Great buy I would say.
