This is a penny that I found trying to fill my books. instead of a hole this is a dent. could THIS be a die error? if it was a dent what could have made it? thanks in advance.

Really hard to tell from those photos but it looks like the dent was made by a BB gun.

I agree. I have several guns including BB guns that could do this. Believe me, this could have been done by a BB gun. Copper is much softer than the impact of a 600-1000 FPM BB gun. It also looks round like BB indents I have seen on coins.

One shot obverse, one reverse.

yes, I know, it was a BB gun. this was about a year ago.

but I still do have 1 more question....

why are both of the dents INCUSE on the obverse, and only 1 INCUSE on the reverse.

wouldn't there have to be 3 shots?

but then there's the other problem, if it dented through the reverse the 1st (or second) time, why didn't is have the same effect on the other shot?

Yes

Difference in volicity of the BB either from being shot from a greater distance, or if it was a C02 gun the cartridge was played out.
