I believe it is just out of focus. It might help if you are to use macro in the digital camera that you have. Macro is usually noted as the "flower" symbol on the camera. I believe that will greatly help out with the details. Lighting wise, I am quite happy with.

Hi Jim
I agree with gxseries about the macro, If your camera does not have one you may have to move away from the coin a couple of more inches to get a clear pic and then crop to just the coin, and if needed enlarge the image.
cropping the photo to just the coin eliminating the background, will decrease file size while making the coin image larger.
lighting is real good !!

Also,I have found resting the camera on the edge a solid object while taking the picture helps to keep the camera from moving and give a clearer picture.

That was using Macro and its a Nikon so I would assume the photo would be better, the scary part is that is good for me, LOL thank you all I will try it again..

You are getting there Jim. A free (!!!) software that you can use to remove the unwanted background is Irfanview - http://www.irfanview.comJust make a square that you want to crop of, hit edit and crop selection! It might sound like a totally horrible and difficult thing, but I think it should not be too hard.
