I bought a silver War Nickel (BU, steps) last week. It was in a carboard/mylar 2x2. I carefully removed it, wearing cotton gloves, and placed it in my dansco album.

A few days later, I noticed a few black spots on the coin. I didn't notice them in the original holder. Am I crazy?

Did the few seconds of air trigger the toning? Was it caused by spittle? Were they there and I just missed them?

I haven't seen this with any other coin. Thanks.

Hi texasmick

There is really no conclusive answer, its possible that some cardboard from the Mylat 2x2 was transmitted to the coin on removal although this is not real likely to be the cause in a weeks time,, it is also possible that the spots were there,I know at times when I receive a new coin, my attention is on the whole coin, it is not until a little later when I sit down and examine each detail that I sometimes catch things that I have missed previously.

My opinion is that the spots were there,a week is a short time for something else to show up on the coin. not impossible I suppose but not as likely .

I don't know if you are definately sure that the material is definately myler. But guessing from what you typed out, it may be possible that you didn't notice it in the first place, unless it was a really dear coin that you paid for, which I cannot explain at the moment.
