Looks like the auction for this has settled down to the $6625 bid. Does anyone know what this set was originally sold for in 1995?

If this is the Gold Anniversary set ($50.00, 25.00, 10.00, 5.00 and $1 dollar Silver Eagle) that you are talking about then I can tell you that I purchased three of them that year and paid about $975 each. It turned out that the Silver Eagle was the one coin that made the difference and without this one, you can not have a complete set of ASE's. It's one of those once in a life time events that makes everyone either very happy or very mad. Depends on IF you have one or not!

I was thinking that it must have been a very nice, short term ROI - looks like it was for some lucky folks. Unfortunately, not me either.

Anyone think the 2006 Gold Buffalo will have the same effect?

The only way this could happen is if this coin becomes the first in a series of Buffalo dollars. Only then would it take on any additional or special meaning which could affect the pricee. The ASE in 1995 with the 'w' mint mark was such a coin, and as you can see the first ASE sure hasn't done this well in value.

OldDan, I thought the Buffalo is the first of the series, next year they will have the buffalo in 1/2oz, 1/4 etc?

Well folks brace yourself as the Mint has already announced at least 2 with possibly 3 different finishes on that gold buffalo and there will be SETS which will probably include the 2006W Silver Eagle. I can see it happening as the Mint will do whatever it takes to get these new gold coins out the door. Should know something very very soon.
