http://cgi.ebay.com/1908-D-10-Dolla...to_W0QQitemZ270511169425QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item3efbb8df91 I've been looking for a decent no motto $10 indian for my collection. This one looks good, but PCI, which is a semi-decent lower tier grading company, gave this one an MS-45? Has anyone heard of this or seem a grade like this?

Best I can figure is that it is a typographical error. I'm no expert in third party grading services, but in response to your question I dug around on the net for a while to see what others say about PCI. The general consensus seems to be that they are rather poor.

Typo I think. Also the older PCI green label slabs were much more accurate than the newer gold labels.

Heh. Funny one. PCI went through some gyrations in ownership and quality; this coin is a pretty good example of that. The "older green labels" which nohope587 mentions are from the original owners of the service, and can be more accurately identified by the specific typeface used on the label: Bargains may be had under this label. The Eagle referenced here, not so much.

It's gotta be a misprint. The coin certainly appears to have wear so I would bet that the assigned grade was supposed to be EF-45.
My main objection to PCI is that they overlook problems that the major services (PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG) will detect. They will slab coins with light cleaning, questionable color, and/or minor damage as if they did not have problems. Then if you attempt to cross them to the major services those problems are pointed out and the coin is rejected or downgraded accordingly. PCI I think has been fairly accurate for details grades and for authentication.
I agree with Nohope that the old green-label PCI slabs (like this one) tended to have more conservative grades than the later slabs with brown labels. This gold eagle will probably be fairly graded in terms of wear and it could be a good buy if an EF-45 coin is what you are looking for.

this is not my bailiwick, but it seems to me that there is a very lite strike to this coin. Unless they almost never come up, or the prices very decent where you can trade off later for a better strike, I would hold off. But that is just my opinion!
