I've collected U.S. coins for a number of years. Over the years I've accumulated enough Canadian coins to start a pretty decent type set. I'd like some advice from you Canadian collectors. Is there a guide book to Canadian coins that is considered standard? Anything comparable to the Red Book we U.S. collectors refer to? Also, does anyone sell a Canadian Type album? Anything similar to the Dansco 7070 for U.S. types? I know Canada mints a number of commemoratives and proof-only coins, but I'm really only interested in circulation strikes. I'd like to put together a type collection starting with Victoria. Thanks in advance for any advice or words of experience and wisdom you can offer me.

For collecting Canadian business strikes, the main books out there are by:
1) Haxby & Willey 2) J.E. Charlton 3) Pierre Charest
For coin albums, I like the Unisafe series. They have plastic pages with pouches that allow you to see both sides of the coin. I believe Whitman has ported albums like the Dansco series for Canadian coins as well.

Than you 1945V I just did a quick net search and found both of the first two books you listed. That's just what I was looking for. It will be a real help. I'm already familiar with the Whitman albums and Uni-safe albums, but the ones I have found for sale are always for year sets or type sets of a single coin ("Canadian Large Cents" for example) Do they publish a general type album? And where would I find it?

I'd be inclined to start with a blank 2X2 album and tailor it to your needs. You're going to encounter a wide variety of coin sizes creating the type set, and you're going to have to decide for yourself on issues like whether the 1858 20c is sufficient, or if the 1c, 5c, and 10c 1858 coins should also be included, in addition to the other Victorian denominations.

Uni-Safe also sells blank albums (no dates), but geared to a certain coin types (all pennies, all dimes, etc.).

I live by the Charlton Canadian Standard Catelogue, and I never miss an issue. Make sure if you buy one after 2010 you ascertain it says Numismatic Issue. This is the 1st year that they produced 2 seperate books. The other one has Royal Canadian Mint commerative collector coins. Id go with the 2x2 albums. If you get sophisticated enough you can write on them the variety/portrait types.

Thanks for all the advice. I assume there is no dedicated type album like Dansco and Littleton make for U.S. coins. I suppose I'll ust make my own with blank pages and 2x2s.
I'm going to order the Charlton catalogue (and thanks for the advice about the two different volumes, dollar1948)

I collect pretty much all Canadian never thought about a type set but have for the US all my main collection is in albums and I have been thinking I may one day put a U>S> type set together and there are great options. For Canadian there are few , If there are any at all I think maybe Whitman.

I wonder why that is. I mean, why is a type set pretty standard for U.S. collecting but not for Canadian coins?

Hello, you picked a great Country to collect coins from! The best advice you will receive from this collector is simple: collect business strikes only and stay away from all and any R.C.M. modern day issues. You'll not only save a lot of money in the long run, you'll also thank me 10 years from now. Glenn

Funny you should resurrect this, I am just right now emptying a Whitman 9081 type album.
Basically it captured up to the Young Bust Liz II.

Yea I have one of those folders also, but the Whitman 9513 is an album and much better holder for the coins. You can see both front and back of each coin. Dansco also made one years ago but they are extremely hard to find. Both Whitman and Dansco albums are out of print and hard to find.
