Honestly is it all about the chase in getting that coin? Once we got it, we look at it and say Ahhh, but then we put it away and check out want list for the next chase. Isn't that what it's all about in our pursuit of the coin?

Yes, its all about the chase, but for me the chase is to upgrade my coins, once I have the basic coin I then look for a better grade, as you get closer to the higher grades the coin is harder to find and therefore the chase becomes more thrilling and satisfying. I only collect raw coins and so the heart beating chase is being able to accurately grade the coin as well.

I suppose, the issue here is we chase different things for different reasons. Depending on why you chase , well then the chase may never end. Ever.

Remember when you were a teenager in High School and a certain member of the other sex caught your attention, wasn't the "hunt better than the slaughter!" Same appeal goes for coin collecting, and as a matter of fact, probably everything else in life, eh? Glenn

Since I also deem part of the chase as learning the history surrounding the coins. For this reason it truly is a never-ending chase as one door opens another. As an example, IMO, one of the most innovative coin design features I have know of is included in the REV of Canadian wartime nickels of 1943-1945. Instead of rim denticles, the message, "We win when we work willingly" is included in Morse code around the circumference. It is almost a hidden message b/c quite a few people miss it being there. So of course this begs the question as to why they did include the Morse code on the circulation issues of the 2005 commemorative of this coin - but otherwise duplicate the design? So then researching this I found they DID include it on the special edition silver ones released from the mint... So researching this I found 2 different commemorative nickels made ... So how many had the gold plating on the V and how many dd not? So... You get the idea. Its all fun!

A mintage of... 6065 gold plated 2005 nickels were issued as part of the RCM Annual Report series. I believe it has the lowest mintage of all nickels ever issued, although its virtually unknown, definitely underappreciated and sells below original issue price of $39.95 :). I have a few of them :).

See ... what I seek from coins is often not the coins themselves. It's the knowledge required, everything I'd need to know to duplicate the coin at that moment in time with a full understanding of the technology used. At the height of this, this included destructive testing (that's all we had)and blatant reproduction of certain coin attributes. This latest round of plated coins has renewed my interest in the output from the Mint because it is so process heavy.

I find it interesting how the government continues to remove value from coinage...
First they eliminated gold and silver, replacing them with "cheap" metals such as copper and nickel...
Then they eliminated even copper and nickel, replacing them with "cheap" crap plated steel.
I think when steel becomes too expensive, they'll move to aluminum...then maybe seashells...or paper money only
The coins from 1858-1936 represent a time when coins had both artistic and real value...today, of course, they have neither :)...

Well I do agree that I am constantly looking to upgrade my coins and that is part of the chase. Sometimes when I am in the final minute of an ebay transaction, my heart is racing with the hope that my bid is the one that will take the prize! When I go to a show, I look for those bargins that others have passed up. The hunt is the treasure, the prize has it's stories.

I am all about the chase, which is why I mainly collect low price world coins. I try and make sets, so the chase is on to make the set. Living in China at the moment and all the modern coins are very boring and the older ones half of them are fake, but I cannot find a 2002 1 yuan coin, the only exciting, though Hong Kong has different coins, and I'm off there soon!

I collect mainly to continue my Uncle's coin collection. It is more sentimental than anything. I dont have a chase, I just want to keep a piece of my Uncle with me.
