I can't tell from the pics, but at least EF-45, probably AU+. I'd need a reverse pictures. On these coins, WATCH OUT for reengraving...it's really common on S mints because I think a lot were worn out, so earlier collectors tried to buff them up by reengraving the details.

You found this with a METAL DETECTOR?

Wow.

The back picture makes me think it has some problems (don't know if its just the lighting though), but without reengraving its worth a LOT of money. I would get it slabbed.

to the community,

That is some lucky find with a metal detector. The picture are a bit small, but from what I can make out I would grade it at least AU-50. Red Book lists it at $7K. Excellent find.

Ditto!

Rare, valuable, fantastic find, submission to a third party grader mandatory!

You might want to have NCS do a conservation on this one. They could possibly arrest any corrosion process that might be starting off on this detector find. Assuming they find some problem they would then give it a details grade and put it in their holder. I really don't see any obvious problems in your photos so maybe you'll luck out and it would end up in a no-problem NGC holder.

So, can you describe the circumstances of your find? I sure wish I could make my metal detector pay off like this!

Thanks for all the INFO . I was just lucky to find the coin. A few years a go I found a cache that had 80 half, 18 quarters , 1 dime, 5 reals ( all difference dates) from 1843 to 1877. And all most all the coins look like this one. And had some good dates and a lot of errors in the coin.

I mean every drop of it! And the fact that it was an M.D. find is spectacular beyond fireworks! Beautiful coin...
