I know these aren't actual gold JFK's but they are some kind of gold plated JFK. Pretty nifty, found all these across 6 rolls today. Anyone shed some light on what these are?

I guess is that they are from a gold-plated "commemorative" set from one of the non-mints that was recently broken apart and cashed in. The only kink in that theory would be the duplicate dates.

Yea I had thought that too, it was some special set. But as you said the duplicate dates don't make any sense. And these look brighter in real life. My scanner didn't (doesn't) do a good job of capturing actual colors.

The downside of scanners, although easy to use, is that they tend to make coins look dull and lifeless.

The duplicates could be a case of multiple sets, or they might have been some sort of recognition award at a place of business or school. I am sure the possibilities are endless.

True that.

I am going to keep these either way but I want to know if they are just some cheap "gold looking" plating or actual gold plating.

I believe that even if it were actual gold, the amount used for plating would be negligible. However, my guess is that they probably took a brass bath.

I agree, I have seen this as well (I have one myself). If motos had found just one, that might have been my first guess.

Toned or plated should be an easy thing to determine; just look at the edge. A properly plated coin would not show the copper ring. If these are toned and not plated, then we can wonder where these coins were kept.

This is not toning, the obverse, reverse and reeding are completely covered in this gold substance. While roll searching I have found one before that had this "gold tone" but I know these are not toned. I just want to know what the substance is that's covering them. It's a very beautiful finish.

I bet its from one of the late night tv commercials (like the current gold plated buffalo ..lol) and just gold plated. Probably someone bought several sets and tried to sell them and could not get anything for them so they ended up in a rolls? maybe? :)

As good a theory as any!

As for the motos' question, does anyone know a good way to determine what the plating is? I would think that a "non-destructive" test would be preferable.

Put an Obama sticker on them and sell them for $19.99 on TV! I found one of those in a box recently.
