I would have to examine it up close, but I would be very wary of buying this coin raw. Offer to give him $200 if he has it slabbed by ANACS. The surfaces do look off to me but this is just a cursory examination, so I will let others chime in further.

From what I can tell it looks to be OK, but this coin type has been counterfeited extensively. I wouldn't buyer it unless it was slabbed.

I bought one of these off ebay a couple weeks ago. Most everyone on here told me it looked fake. I was just hoping it was a good deal ... when I got the coin .. I knew it was fake right away. Lucky the guy returned my money. When they say on here that something might be wrong with the coin .. beware .. or have it checked out by someone who really knows.

Do you mean " Trade dollar" and not "Straight Dollar" for this thread title?

It looks genuine to me but I'm no Trade dollar expert. It does look improperly cleaned. $200 is a fair price if you have a return privilege.

a Trade dollar is one series of coin I refuse to buy raw just for the fact that there are more counterfeit ones out there than there are real ones

Here is my type 1876-S Trade dollar for comparison. It is an EX PCGS AU-55. One noticeable difference between mine and the one posted is the thickness and look of the denticles and rim. That alone would be enough to concern me. $200 would be a very reasonable price if genuine, but as others have stated, it is very risky to buy raw. There are many high quality die struck fakes out there that would fool all but the very best counterfeit detectors. I would hold out and spend an extra $50-$100 on a certified piece.

i tend to agree. the coin in question seems to be too dull and lifeless for the amount of wear, I can also see what johnny is talking about the denticles. I would go credible TPG only on the Trade dollars.
