You're right GFR3. I think it's too early to speculate until all the data is in.The pair my wife got for change looks like they are fresh out of a mint roll. The question now is how many were minted and are they rare enough to pay a high price for? I'll post a pic. later (I am going to hang on to these 2 until we know for sure what is going on.)Also,my wife remembers what store she got them from, which means a return visit. If we get some more I'll keep everyone informed. Oh the R.C.M.

I'm not great at photography but here is 1 of the 2 coins. Both have full mint lustre.

As I posted in another thread (I didn't notice this one), I have three 2009 cents I received from circulation and one is non-magnetic.

I wish I knew the rationale of the RCM for doing this. Makes no sense at all.

I would imagine the RCM probably had a few old planchets left over and decided they might as well use them. The major questions as I see it are: 1) Just how many old planchets were used? 2) Was this an "official" decision? Or did some worker take it upon himself? Or was it an honest mistake where planchets got mixed together? 3) Any Proof coins made this way? EDIT: the ebay coin I listed is at US$35 now

The auction finished at $85.55. That's quite a gamble people were willing to take to see if this could turn out to be scarce.
