My Brother-in-law picked up this 1905 Indian Head cent for me for Christmas. It has , for lack of a better term an interesting semi circular groove/impression extending through the date and through UN of United.

Any ideas what may have caused this? Is this a mint error or post mint damage?

I have added a pic of the reverse. It appears a piece of glitter was on the reverse.

Thanks,

JimR

I think that the answer 'might' depend on what the other side of the same coin looks like.

the reverse should give some clues.
You might also try stacking this one atop another IHC from 1900-09 to compare whether it looks out of round.

Ninety percent of the time, when I try to assess something from online pictures, I am dead wrong. Keeping with that tradition, let me say this:

The rather strange appearance of separation of milling (or denticles) from the rim just above the 'R' in America leads me to think that maybe something like a hammer and socket may have gotten too close to this coin.

Okay thanks Jim.

After seeing the reverse, I will have to stick with my hammer and socket theory.

I would agree...post mint damage is the more likely explanation.
