Not one of my favorite coins by any means, but I thought that it was interesting and eye catching, so I wound up with it. I 'think' that this is a cracked planchet, but I have never held one before, so I am asking.

Cracked planchet, and quite a dramatic one.

Not that it happens very often, but I have to disagree with SuperDave. That is a lamination with a partial delamination, not a cracked planchet. You can see the delaminated postion along the lower jaw to the back of the head. Planchet cracks go all the way through the coin and are most apparent on edge like this Peace Dollar.

We actually agree, biokemist, due to my usual imprecision about terminology.

The strict technical definition of "cracked planchet," of course, meets your description. OTOH, what we see here looks more like a crack than a hole, and since it quacked I called it a duck.

Thanks very much Dave and bio. Along with that link that bio provided, I am just straight as a pretzel on what I should call this thing now.

No crack through the coin by the way.

I would probably call this one a lamination error also instead of split or cracked planchet but since I am no error expert I am just going by what I have heard others call coins that look similar

I would call it a lamination. Cracked planchet is normally reserved for coins where the crack goes all the way through the planchet.
