Ok I have been thinking about changing my Commems in my 7070 album from Modern to Classic. I have already acquired a Stone Mountain Free of charge from HJB and was wondering what design you all like best. I have looked at a few others and since I have 3 other holes and quite a few designs I like I thought I would see which ones you like best

Many people have an 1893 Columbian in their set but you could be a bit different and go for the first commemorative, the 1892 Columbian which is not quite as common. IMO, two of the better classic designs are that of the Oregon Trail and Texas Independence, one of those fits nicely in a set. And for the third if your budget allows, something to represent your home state- the 1937 Roanoke Island 350th Anniversary.

Texas is definitely one I was considering. I was also considering all that had some form of eagle on them, but I really want a Roanoke also since its for NC

I guess you would love Panama-Pacific. An eagle on the reverse.

I also like the Oregon Trail but I think just about every 7070 album I have seen has one of these in it. Of course allot of them have Texas as well. there are so many to chose from this is probably going to take awhile to find the ones I like most. Maybe I should just leave well enough alone because I don't think I have seen anyone with Modern Commems in theirs except mine. I have to ask, whats up with the Rhode Island coin design, it looks like the pilgrim is getting ready to give the indian "5". The indian has his hand out and the pilgrim has his arm up in the air like the next move is its coming down for them to slap hands

1918 Illinois Centennial has a fantastic Eagle IMO.

What I did was to look through the commemorative section of the RedBook, and highlight the coins I found interesting. I would start by highlighting (yes, with a fluorescent yellow highlighter) what appealed to me either by design or historical interest. Some coins I find historically interesting but having an uninspired design, and vice versa. In addition, we all have grown up in different areas of the country, so a regional coin may be more interesting. I would then rank them by the possibility of finding an acceptable condition coin in a price range I could afford. Everyone has a different historical interest, birthplace/home, and budget. Therefore, everyone will have a different selection of desirable commems. -wheatiefan

Bryan, are you not allowed to have two albums? One for classic, one for modern? If you could have both, it might alleviate some gut wrenching decisions (but initiate some others).

How about thinking of it as 'themes' Bryan ...
You can have the 'Civil War' theme with the Gettysburg and Antietam Halves .... both lovely designs.
You can have the 'Engineering Achievement' theme with the Pan-Pacific and Bay Bridge halves .... again .... lovely coins.
You can have the "Frontier Explorer" theme with the Boone and California (Gold Panner) halves .....
And so it goes ..... that's how I see the Classic US Comms .... as themes to help us understand and celebrate the history behind them.
Best wishes with your choices!
Let us know what you decide.

I think 90% of the Classic Commemorative coins are beautiful so you have a lot to chose from. Two of my favorites are the Pilgrim and Oregon Trail. I own the Stone Mountain, Pilgrim, Booker T Washington and the Carver. I really don't like the design of last two but the are cheap in high grades as I have cerified MS 65 in both of them.

Well I decided to go with classics, I like most of the designs.
I already have 2. The Texas Independence and the San Diego (love both designs, the texas design is very intricate as well).
I am struggling with the other two...I like the stone mountain, Oregon Trail, Bay Bridge, I thought about Roanoke being from NC too...lots of choices....

I am collecting both the classic and modern. In the classics I only buy slabbed coins because my grading skill is poor and I want to insure against a counterfeit and/or cleaned coin. In the modern I try and buy OGP US Mint. My dilemma is that I have to buy 2 of everything(children and Grandchildren :) ) I tend to buy those coins that are related to the internal and external conflicts of our country and the themes of Freedom, Gallantry, Honor and Sacrifice. just my p.o.v.

I haven't started my commemoratives for my 7070 yet, but will start with the 1921 Alabama. Yes, I live in Alabama.
