I think this is 1878P rev 79 VAM 222C spike eye. I didn't notice any doubling on the reverse, but its the only spiked eye I could find... well I got half way there I will try again

I don't have the faintest idea what it is aladin, but I have noticed that the VAMpires come out mainly at night, so by the time you wake up in the morning, you should have some sort of answer or request for more pictures.

Good idea!
From some of the wakes that I have seen here, there are some pretty big fish in these waters.

(But), they are easily spooked, so I will shut up and be quiet.

aladinslamp, Can you verify a C2 or C3 reverse? The difference is very subtle. The C2 is on the left and the C3 on the right. The C3 is a right angle at the bottom of the feather. The C2 curves slightly upward

It is a C3 reverse Buddy. I am still confused about the numbering system (222 a, b, c, d). I don't know if all four are just die states of the same obverse? If so, maybe more than one of them has the spikes also, even though they are not mentioned. You know as well as I, that there could be eye spikes on other vams in that group as well, even though not mentioned in the descriptions.
To be truthful, I am not sure if I see the spikes or not in your photos. Your best bet may be to get a good eye close up to vampicker or Brian. If anyone will know for sure, it will be those guys.

aladinslamp, Yes a C3 reverse and most likely a 222c. Here's your last picture with the spike outlined ... I would like to be more helpful with attributions here, but they block wiki sites on the work-station. I can't access VAMWorld to verify other PUPs for the 222c.

Quote: vamworld only posts the eye picture, Does the written description include any other pick-up points? I normally learn as much if not more from the descriptions on the page. The pictures are a nice backup but they are "open source" offerings that sometimes lack definition. I've noted several pages that have incorrect photos as a result of the naming conventions. If someone uses the same file name as a photo already in the database, it overwrites the original. I think it's the 1878-P VAM 33 or 34 that includes pictures of a Peace dollar. Newcomers can get turned around 180 degrees on some of the pages.

222C II 2 · C3b (Spiked Eye) (194) I-2 R-6 Obverse II 2- Short spikes above and below eyelid front. Broken point of fourth right star. "this is the first half of the description"..... I will post a few more pictures that are not noted, as well as pasting the descriptions, closer shot of the eye spike as well as the S in EPLURIBUS which is very distinct, a possible broken B in EPLURIBUS, and a weak UST on the reverse due to grease? right stars doubled/quadrupled? and a broken 4th star...last pic is a possible doubled bottom arrow head, I originally focused on the strike thru grease on the UST, however never mentioned most likely to minor to list....hope this helps.... "this is the second half of the description" This 1878 Reverse of 79 variety has a small die gouge on the obverse starting above the eyelid and reappearing just below in front of the eye. The reverse shows hub doubling of UNITED STATES bottom inside with left inside strong on you of UNITED, I of In at top, top right edge of eagle's right wing, and left edge of some leaves in left wreath. Bottom feather of eagle's right wing is squared off and raised. This is the normal reverse design, except for hub doubling. I made a mistake in copying and started my replay in between the reply....here are the pics.....
