Hi all
Im new to this forum and new to coins as well. I was curious if anyone might be able to help me figure out the value of this coin?
I hope not to irritate anyone with my question but my curiousity is getting the best of me and the people that have posted threads that I have read seem quite nice.
Thanks all
Theresa

Hey I want to welcome you to the forum and also to tell you that any question you may have would be gladly answered and would never get on anyones nerves around here, thats why we come here for people like you to try to help educate the new collector of this fine hobby. With that being said, I am no grading expert and I dont want to discourage a new collector with a wrongful grade (because I am not sure which coins has weak strikes yet) so I will leave that to the other Morgan experts of the forum. I do hope you stick around awhile and maybe we all can learn from each other. I started this forum a few months ago with the same type of question that you have not knowing what kind of responces I would get back, wether I would be ridiculed for asking such a question or not. But I was welcomed with open arms and have learned so much in just the short few months that I have been a member that I am sometimes amazed at some of the answers I know now, I hope you can gain the same experience from all of us here at this fine community because it will not only help you gain knowledge but also help you save some heartache because buying a coin that you just knew was a BU coin and finding out that it is a lesser grade or even worse counterfit is heart breaking and many have gotten discouraged for that very reason and left the hobby all together

Welcome to the forum and dont apoligise for asking questions everyone here welcomes the chance to help you with your questions. everyone here is real nice and very helpful, I hope you enjoy your stay okay now on your morgan scans are hard to really look at and give youa fair estimate and photos are better but still it is easier to grade a coin in hand. I would estimate your coin to be a strong Very Fine maybe better depending on the series and wether that mint (philadelphia)and that year 1891 had a weak strike or not. I would say its worth 15.00 - 20.00, but there are many more experienced morgan collectors in the forum who might be able to give you more info or better idea on grades, it may take a day or two based on time zones and peoples schedules as we have collectors from atleast 55+ countries I do believe

Hi Tiresam30

Welcome to the forum and the Hobby !!

Your coin looks like a technical AU (almost uncirculated) But I'm concerned about the halo around the details, this is often an indication of cleaning,, This is not a good thing for a coin !!

If you can enlarge the pics a bit , it would help to see for sure if this is the case with your coin or not .

My first thoughts when looking at it is it was once polished. I would think this coin would grade at XF before the cleaning.
Value of it... $15 would be generous, IMO.

But welcome to the forum. There are a lot of nice, knowledgable people here who can help you out with about anything you want.

Was this coin somethng passed down to you? Or do you plan to get into doing much collecting?

Thank you all so much for your reply! I have been holding onto that coin forever lol! And still will , even if its not worth anything I like it. When you say polished , do you mean someone cleaned it? Once again you all seem very nice and thank you for your time!

Hi Theresa and welcome to the forum! You certainly waded into a bunch of us Morgan nuts. I got here a little too late (got a lot on my plate these days), but I can't resist a good Morgan question. However, it looks like Rick, Dave, Jordan, and Jim have pretty well got it covered. Circulated 91-P Morgans are pretty common, so there isn't much value in them (just barely above melt) until they get into the mid-Mint State condition, and even then their value wouldn't be realized unless they've been professionally graded and encapsulated.

That said, there is no such thing as an ugly Morgan. ANY Morgan is worth hanging onto for its own sake; they're not making many anymore (well, except in China where counterfeiting is big business ).

It does appear that at one time the coin was cleaned however, it is re-toning. Has anyone calculated how long it takes silver to re-tone? Conditions, humidity included and then return to it's current market/collectors value in the re-tone state?

I can tone a coin in a month without added chemicals, in the ambient air of my desk.

Retoning will not remove the hairlines scratches from the coin, once these are there, they are there to stay.
