I'm sure it's a fake. I couldn't be lucky enough to find an original, but if anything, it is a very nice copy. I don't think it's cast, but I can't tell if it's silver or not. The person I got it from said it was in the family for probably over 75 years. Who knows really.

I don't know how thick the originals were, but this one is probably 2mm or so. Plus the main difference I see in this one compared to originals is 3 vertical dots underneath the second "I" of "XII". I have not seen this on originals.

I wonder if the three dots might be a sort of makers mark to distinguish this person's replicas. What does everyone think?

I'm 99% confident it's a replica. The lettering is not correct for a genuine specimen. Also, the edge of this piece looks too thick for a genuine piece. The patina also looks manufactured.

At 2 mm thick it is WAY too thick to be genuine. These coins were THIN more like .5 mm

The pitting looks like casting flaws.

How much does it weigh? If it were real I'd expect about 5 grams.

I didn't pay anything for it, specifically. It was in a grouping I bought. I have always loved this coin and since I can't afford an original, I think it is a decent replica without having the big COPY stamped on it somewhere. The owner said it's been in her family for possibly 50+ years.

I think what you have is a Peter Rosa copy; I just found one too, if you look carefully at the rim, you will see "COPY" written vertically down the edge. I thought it was a fake anyway, but it broke my heart to see that. I also got the famous "Willow" tree sixpence, that one doesn't say copy, but Rosa didn't tag the first generation or so. At least you'll know when you find a real one. Anyone know the value of Rosa's "original" copies?
I also got a couple off-center pennies from the early 50s, one of which is quite striking (about 80% off-center), just the date and MM visible, which I'll post on here eventually
