A few cents more. Find a product called nic-a-date and it can reveal the date for you. While it does hurt the coin, you could be holding onto a key date which would be worth something more than the few cents more it is now.

Go to the grocery store and get a bottle of white vinegar. Pour a little into a glass jar and drop them into that. In most cases, in a day or two, you'll make out a date (and, if it has one, a mint mark). For really, really stubborn cases, give it up to a week. Never had to do any of mine for longer than that.
